President Alison Byerly was among more than 100 college and university presidents to sign a joint letter to President-elect Donald Trump urging him to forcefully “condemn and work to prevent the harassment, hate and acts of violence that are being perpetrated across our nation.”
The letter appeared in the Nov. 18 issue of Inside Higher Ed.
Byerly notes that the higher education leaders who signed the letter “represent a range of institutions, no doubt with a range of political views on the parts of their students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, and friends.”
“In urging President-Elect Trump to disavow acts of hatred, bigotry, and violence, we are appealing to common values of human decency and civil behavior that will be important to all of us as we work to support our individual communities and our nation,” she says.
Earlier this week, President Byerly sent out this message encouraging students, faculty, and staff to create opportunities for the open and respectful exchange of ideas.
